Ghanaian Trap Star O’Kenneth Opens Up on Came of Age, Personal Struggles and His First Headline Show

Ghanaian trap artist O’Kenneth is entering a new phase, and he wants listeners to hear every part of it.

In a recent interview, the rapper opened up about the story behind his 18-track project, Came of Age, describing it as one of his most personal bodies of work so far. The project explores sacrifice, loyalty, pressure, responsibility, family, loneliness and the hard process of growing into himself.

For O’Kenneth, Came of Age is more than a title. It is a reflection of growth, clarity and maturity after years of finding his sound and learning how to handle life, fame and pressure.

He explained that fans mostly knew him for drill and hard trap records, but this project gave him room to show another side of himself.

“I wanted something more intimate,” he said, adding that the tape reflects parts of his personal life that people do not always get to see.

O’Kenneth also spoke about his early connection to hip-hop. According to him, his older brothers introduced him to artists like Soulja Boy and Gucci Mane, and that sound quickly became his safe space. Although he once tried Afro-inspired sounds, he felt more connected to rap because it allowed him to express himself with both melody and emotion.

The rapper admitted that hip-hop influenced his lifestyle from a young age, including his fashion choices. He recalled going to school with sagging pants, only to pull them up before entering the school compound because his mother often complained.

Behind the music, O’Kenneth’s story has not been easy. He revealed that he left home at 17 in search of purpose and independence. Before settling on his own, he stayed with Rabbi Jones, whom he credited as one of the people who helped him find direction. He also worked for a period on his father’s poultry farm, although he knew he wanted to build his own path through music.

Several songs on Came of Age reflect those experiences. “Easy,” despite its title, speaks about a life that was not easy. “Pain 2” touches on school struggles, addiction and being banned from school at one point. “Cold Shoulder” captures loneliness, disappointment and the feeling of not always having someone to encourage him. “Far From Home” reflects leaving familiar ground in search of greener pastures.

O’Kenneth was also open about past struggles with alcohol and other habits. He said he abused alcohol as a teenager while trying to cope with his problems, but experience eventually taught him balance because he had work to do and could not stay trapped in that lifestyle.

One of the standout songs from the project is “Balenciaga,” which has already caught attention from fans. O’Kenneth explained that the song started with melodies before the concept came together. The hook plays with the idea of buying Balenciaga but not knowing what to match it with, while also touching on ambition, culture and wanting more from life.

The rapper also discussed the album cover, which shows him separated from a group. He said the artwork represents his decision to distance himself from certain pressures while still existing within society. The cover was designed by Wire, who is based in the United States, after O’Kenneth shared visual references with him.

Although Came of Age is still fresh, O’Kenneth is already planning more releases. He revealed that he has several videos ready or in progress, including visuals for “Came of Age,” “My Swing” and other tracks. He also said fans can expect another compilation soon, explaining that he wants to stay consistent after being away from full-length projects for some time.

The biggest announcement, however, was his first headline show. O’Kenneth confirmed that the event is planned for December and will be titled G.Y, a name connected to his YGA concept. He said the show will likely take place in the early part of December.

For an artist who said he only began taking music seriously around 2023, O’Kenneth’s rise has been fast. But from the way he speaks about discipline, growth and responsibility, Came of Age feels like more than just an album title. It sounds like a personal declaration.

O’Kenneth is no longer only proving his place in Ghana’s trap scene. He is showing the story, scars and mindset behind the music.
